Quick Peek.
I have been working on two exterior lanterns that will go next to the front door.. I fabricated the top of it out of sheet metal. The lanterns are going to have a hinged doors and a latch (hopefully). I think I will go for a weathered copper finish rather than a highly polished one. The panels are 1/2 inch wide.
I bought microscope cover glass to cut for the panes but then I thought about using some mica sheet I have. I can solder right next to that and it has a nice aged tinted look. I am waiting for some copper foil to arrive to frame the mica panels with so I can get those soldered together.
I am stuck once again waiting for the mail to arrive. UGH!

Bises.
Your lantern is going to be great. And using mica is a good idea (I would never have think about using mica !).
ReplyDeleteI hope you will receive very soon the copper foil so that you can show us the completed project !
Ohhhhh.....the latern is going to be absolut wonderful!!!!
ReplyDeleteI do hope your mail arrives soon then, since I look forward to seeing the end result. The glass looks nicely weathered indeed. I think these lanterns will be wonderfull!
ReplyDeleteI am not sure glass weathers but it does get dirty from smoke. Amber colored mica has been used in light fixtures forever. Maybe even before glass was used.
ReplyDeleteThe top is so pretty! I can't wait to see the whole lantern made by you, Catherine:)
ReplyDeleteme encantara verlo terminado ¡¡
ReplyDeletebesos elena
These will be two delightful lanterns :-)
ReplyDeleteOne day, you should post a photo of yourself to work with the soldering iron: I think a fascinating image :-)
Mini lovely hugs, Flora
va a quedar un farolillo genial.
ReplyDeletebesujis!!!!
I am always so fascinate by the exquisite pieces that you make....I love seeing the work in progress and not just the finished item also....like all the items that you make I know these too shall be a mini master piece.
ReplyDeleteMica is such a gorgeous idea. It has been truly used forever and it has such a lovely colour, much better and softer than simple glass.
ReplyDeleteI join the choir and I look forward to the complete lantern: it's going to be wonderful. Rosanna
I cannot wait to see the finished project. Someday when I see it attached to your dollhouse, I will be simply green with jealousy!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that the lantern will be wonderful, I'm anxious to see the next step. ;)

I often find lamps the least attractive of all dollshouse miniatures available to us, but they can really make a scene come to life. Your metal working skills are so wonderful to have, and for us to see what you can do with it! I already like what I see, and you have only just started. I love the shape on that little curved top. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThat looks good
ReplyDeleteThe hood is very nice.
Beautifully done with the sketch
Greetings, Aexandra
josje I often find lamps in 1: 1 scale very unattractive too. BUT... They are among my favorite things in miniature when they are good. Scott Hughes makes the best ones I have ever seen!!!!!!! He only does the Tom Bishop Show in Chicago and unfortunately he doesn't have a web site or catalog.
ReplyDeleteFor a simple cottage I don't need anything fussy or elaborate. These will be wall mounted. I might only need one actually.
Hello Catherine,
ReplyDeleteI am so impressed with your metal workmanship. I can't wait to see them completed...Excellent work!
Hugs,
Giac
woah...it's gonna be awesome. O.O i've never heard of mica sheets before, now you've gotten me all intrigued! thank you for the recommendation (again!)
ReplyDeleteCatherine, I love your lamp so far! It will be so stunning when it is completed and using Mica is perfect! It does have a nicer glow to it. I can't believe how anxious I am to see the house that the lantern will be attached to!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see this finished. Using the mica is a brilliant idea.
ReplyDeleteCatherine I love your pic of Groupie and Puffie, I am sure cats hynotise us into doing their bidding. I can't wait to see your finished lanterns. I did stained glass classes many years ago, I had forgotten about copper foil and don't know what mica is, so will wait in anticipation.
