Second Life For Vintage Petit Point

I bought these three pieces of Schildkraut petit point on eBay for next to nothing!. There is a #1. compact (stitching on both sides), #2. mirror with folding lipstick holder and #3. perfume bottle. I knew I was going to be re-purpose them someday.

The only piece I have taken apart is the one in the middle. I wanted to use it for a small area rug/carpet. Thinking it would be great in a bathroom or in front of a sink in the kitchen. I love the colors in all of these pieces. That was improved by washing them all. I learned in embroidery classes to use Original Dawn dishwashing liquid. It is mild and leaves no chemicals behind. Even Kilmouski gets washed in it!

The glue went so close to the stitches on the back I wondered how I was going to deal with it. I finally decided on a bit of iron on interfacing to secure it. I made a black twisted cord for a finished edge.

 The finished carpet, so sweet.

It will be interesting to see how you end up repurposing the other 2.

    1. Thank you Elizabeth. The perfume one is going to become a part of my assemblage necklace. I have no idea what i will do with the compact pieces.

  3. I find the direction that it is stitched in very interesting, is it continental stitch? It looks as if the rows are running diagonal. Nice job with adding the cord it looks great!

  4. I noticed that too. It is very odd. All there pieces are stitched like that. I thought you would be able to explain it to me. The original stickers all said 1,650 stitches a square inch too. That math makes no sense at all to me. Forty count is 1600 per square inch.

  5. Perfect. Even more so because you didn't have to spend three weeks sewing to make it =0P

    1. You are so right! Despite it's size it would take a long time to stitch. It is a design I would have chosen to work on though. I liked it enough.
      Thank you Pepper.

  10. What a great way to re-purpose these little pieces of petit point! The rug looks very sweet! Maybe the other pieces could become a table rug or the seat of an ottoman... (it is hard to tell how little they are in the pictures!)What great finds!

  11. Thank you!

I just bought two more pieces that are different but good matches to the oval rug/carpet. All of which will probably be in a bathroom.

  12. WON DER FUL !!!! I wish I could find something similar. You made a great job with it and you were brave tearing it apart, I am not sure I'd have ever dared

  14. One thing I have always enjoyed about miniatures is how you can take a forgotten item and reuse it....the ultimate in recycling.......and you have put your recycling to perfect use.

  16. Very pretty! A few weeks ago I saw (or actually my Norwegian friends who were with me spotted them first ;-) ) several petit point handbags in a vintage clothes shop in Amsterdam. They were reasonably priced but I didn't get any because I didn't think the colors would go in my rooms. Now I think maybe I'll have to go back, haha!

    1. Thank you. Just a tiny area rug.

I have seen miniature chairs I assumed were upholstered by cutting up vintage bags. It can be really beautiful. You just have to get lucky enough to find the right colors, images and stitch count. If you buy some I hope you will share a few photos.
