Your Opinion

Please click on the photo twice for a close up.

The second fence finally arrived for the house. I have painted and shaped it to fit but not glued it in place.
I am not sure I like it. Rather then go into my opinions... I would much rather have your thoughts about it, if you would care to share them. Thank you! XXX

UP DATE.... TO YOUR COMMENTS

I loved the second floor balcony fence that came with the kit but... I must say it has more of a French flavor in my opinion and probably doesn't belong on Georgian townhouse. I have found the actual house this kit was fashioned after in Bath, England.

I thought you might like to see what the real house looks like that the kit was modeled after. I got the address off the box the kit came in. They don't have the elegance the 1: 144 scale one has. :-)

Karin is right about the reason for the ground fences being there to protect people from falling into the basement stairs. However I had disregarded that fact for an effect I was hoping to achieve.

I think I will just have to live with it a while. I hate the idea of changing that great second floor balcony fence to match the first floor one.

Thanks to everyone that leaves me thier thoughts! XXX

  1. Arh, the missing piece to the puzzle and thus they answer many questions for me. I LOVE the additional railings! :o))

This how they look in real life, London, e.g. Belgravia etc.

  3. Beautiful house! I love the balcony fence. Not sure if the ground fence matches though well enough. But hard to tell by pictures.

  4. Ilike it with the fences, if it is suppose to be real-time, in the Netherlands this is how it is, but personally I would go without, ;), not much help I guess...

  5. It is perfect Catherine.....it completes it nicely. You teeny tiny plants are simply divine. As always you have done it all to perfection!

  6. The fences are really pretty they could be left like that but for me somehow they don't match together. But this is only my opinion ;D

  7. The fence is something you'd have found in real life, more over it's very cute. I'd leave it. Have a nice day, Rosanna

  9. Hello Catherine
In the second fenc: I like the big lateral, is perfect with the topiaries but the other I think is very small and the topiary is closed. would you put a lantern and a mailbox here????

  12. The fencing is nice but....
That detail is used when there is a basement level with big window wells. You will have a visual memory of this so that is why it feels wrong to you and to me. Without the need for keeping people from falling into the well it becomes a non functional decorative element...froo froo.

  13. If the concern is 'reality imitated' so to speak then the fence is appropriate. However, from an 'aesthetics' point of view it is a distration as it draws the eye downward away from the other beautiful railing and the other trimmings on the facade. And there are lots of real houses of this type 'sans fence'. I'd do away with it myself, although I realise I'm going against popular opinion :)

  14. The fence is perfect Catherine, without question. But think about a little front garden like this http://www.living-gardens.co.uk/img/slideshows/formal/3.jpg
It's not much, only a dot of colour which will lend your house a cozy atmosphere.

  15. I love the fence, BUT I think the fence AND the balcony railing are not going particularly well together.

  16. Deffinatly keep the fence it looks great, Just and Idea maybee add something to the top windows to balance it out.

  17. You are right, the kit is far more refined than the actual real life houses and that's why I thought it more London than Bath! lol

Karin is correct with her comments....I guess not everything in real life can be done in 1/144th scale.

You have to do it what pleases you and what you want. :o)) Nothing deflects from the fact how beautifully you have made it and that it‘s a real mini treasure to behold. :o))

  18. For my eye, the only problem is that the railing and the fence have the same high. But I like that the design is different.

  19. Jeannette,

Easy for you to say with your exceptional skill for making flowers and plants. :-)

Perhaps the next time I will plan to have more room in the front of the house for a garden. Though I know it would never match your standard.

  20. I find the house even more beautiful than the original!
I, however, to give a touch of realism, painting the wall of the floor in light brown, as in reality.
I really like the finish on the wall!
I like the railing to the pavement, but it clashes with the railing on the first floor, which seems a little French...
and if you compounded a ditch on the left side only, with a staircase that descends to the basement?
but we are talking about a house on a scale of 1:144, so my views are absurd.. :))
therefore propose to remain, however, the barrier on the ground floor, it serves as a separation for the garden!
    kisses, Caterina

  21. My other comment seems to have disappeared. blogger is so erratic at the moment!

As said, I think Keith has done an amazing job creating this kit and I love both sets of rails. The black rails at the bottom always make me think of the formality of an English city building in movies - in the same way that a thatched cottage evokes the countryside.
I look forward to seeing his next 2 kits in the same series. :-)

  22. Both are beautiful! I really love how the topiary looks behind the lower fence. Maybe simpler is better? Either way, you win!

  23. Catherine, The railings are Beautiful even though they do NOT match! I know that in the 2nd world war the need for iron caused many people to take down their unnecessary iron and turn it into ships.... maybe that's why the two railings no longer match? I think I like them both for different reasons.... the one in the street level is SO tidy and just like the real ones.... and the balcony one is just beautiful, even if it is more French in style! I know perfectionism is not really my thing.... I like the slightly odd details!

  24. I like the second railing personally. Along with the front door, it has a real "10 Downing Street" feel about it. Although it is a simplier design, I think it is more formal and possibly more elegant. Just me though...
The little house is truly divine!

  25. It's your house so you must decide what you like, I have a book on Cheltenham with some pictures of ironwork, I will scan it and send it to you, quite interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I need your e-mail address to send you the scans, there is one with straight railings on the ground and fancy on the balcony and then a lot with a "French" feel on balconies and in Georgian England!!!! elgakoster@mweb.co.za

  27. I think your house is absolutely delightful and you should be very, very proud of yourself, it is stunning :0) I love the two sets of railings and wouldn't change a thing.

  28. I like the house with both the fences, and I like that they don't match. It gives it more character and looks more realistic. I think it would be too matchy-matchy if the fences were the same.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I like the effect of the fence at ground level, it sort of anchors the building a little better in its space. I also think the different pattern of the fence works better than a matching pattern would.

I have been visiting your blog regularly, and very much enjoy seeing your work and that of the artists you respect and collect. I was then wondering if there was a reason you and Linda hadn't publicized the maker of this kit. I would be interested in knowing who is making this and in being able to see what else they do.

Will you be at Tom Bishop's Chicago show this year?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thank you Everyone! It is interesting to see your various opinions and I appreciate you taking your time to share them.

    Patricia,

I have not published the maker of the kit for one simple reason.... I promised that I wouldn't. I should tell you that...Linda (Une Petite Folie) had nothing to do with the promise I made. I am sure if you look around you will be able to find the kit now. :-)

  31. Thanks, Catherine, I had a feeling it was something like that, as I said, you are very nice about telling people when and where you find great stuff.

Are you planning on attending the Chicago show? I'd love to meet you if you have the time to stop by my table for a minute.

  32. Patricia,

I tend to doubt that I will be going. I had planned to go all year but recent events caused me to rethink it.

Thank you! I would have liked to meet you too. If things change I will let you know. :-)

  33. Catherine, bear in mind that when it comes to miniatures, I live in a mouse hole in the basement and you are in the palatial residence at the top of the building. That said, I will give you the honest opinion you asked for. The fence on the street floor suits the style of a Georgian house. But, I would remove the small one. I find the enclosed space too small for the topiary tree. And, it's just too much fence. It distracts from the house. Although the second floor balcony railing is beautiful, it does not match the bottom fence railing. Also, it is not true to the Georgian period. To me, it's a distraction. I know it would be a lot of work, but if you want a second floor balcony railing, in your place, I would order the same railing as the first floor one and install it. It would make a night and day difference. I know it's a lot of work, but if someone can do it, you can. I do hope I have not offended. I could never do what you do, Catherine. I have the utmost respect for your most wonderful work.

  34. Dear Catherine, I have carefully read all the reviews and I must confess that I'm more undecided than ever and I would not find myself in your shoes ...
The building is beautiful and I think that it continue to be so even without the fence, so ... Follow your heart :-)
    Mini hugs, Flora
