Finished Aunt Olga Petit Point Carpet

I am delighted to tell you I have finally finished my carpet. I am so excited to get on with other projects that have been whirling around in my mind for months. I have another crazy nut house in mind and I want to start making some windows.

  1. Hi Catherine

I have seen your previous posts showing your progress on your carpet and you should feel very proud of yourself for making such a beautiful carpet. Well done.

  3. Absolutely SENSATIONAL!!!! I hope that you are breaking out the champagne Catherine, and celebrating for all you are worth because this carpet (which would have daunted lesser folks), has been completed and COMPLETED WELL! :D You mentioned the nut house that you want to do, but I know that I am impressed that you managed to avoid the "nut house" in the process of stitching this intricate carpet pattern.
BRAVA! And Many Many Curtain Calls! :D

    1. Thank you so much Elizabeth. There were times when I thought the carpet would send me straight to the wing-ding Hilton. Mostly it was ll those knots that occur when you pull your thread through the gauze. Grrrr. I wonder how many hours I spent un-doing those.

    2. Hi again Catherine! I was wondering in light of how long it must have felt from beginning to end of this Magic Carpet ride, do you believe that you will ever do another?
and would you do anything different, if you did?

    3. I want to do some pillows on a smaller count silk gauze. I have a patten I got to do that. One of my favorite images of William Morris Brer Rabbit.

Next time I do petit point I will use Thread Heaven. It really helps stop the tangles.

I also do not like half cross stitch. The first Aunt Olga I started I used that stitch. I abandoned that piece for a variety of reasons. I used the continental stitch on this finished carpet. It takes a lot more thread using that stitch. It is worth it i think.

  8. Congratulations Catherine!!! You have made yourself a wonderful heirloom and an amazing miniature. I expect with such a project that far more people start it and never finish....such is the nature of this type of project! I applaud your work ethic, once you started you keep going (and going) until it was finished and resisted started anything else......you must be (or should be) VERY proud of yourself!
    Now......what's next? (Ha ha)

Other people have stitched this carpet too. I have seen them online. I am sure they did it better. This was my first. I learned a lot.

Thank you so much for sharing your stitching journey on this amazing carpet.
The back is so neat which is a true test for petit point.

  14. Thank you so much Janine.

I really wanted a back without tangled threads. I was so scared that when I took it off the frame, it might look like there was a big rat under it. ;-)

You're right. I worked on it like it was a job. Only someone who has stitched a piece of petit point could understand how many hours it takes.

  20. Catherine, this is the most fabulous carpet I've ever seen, and could only come from your fairy hands!
But I understand that in the long run it can become a grueling work ...
A feeling that I can never prove, of course ;-)
Now. I'm glad you can dedicate yourself to others (certainly) amazing projects :-)
I hope your health is being completely restored...

  23. Bravo Catherine ! Fringes are so boring to do. With the same pattern we all have a different carpet, cause the shaded thread. Once again, félicitations !

  24. Thank you.

I am watching with great interest while you stitch your carpet. You are so right! All of our carpets would be very different next to each other. Partly because the thread dye lots (Gentle Arts) vary so much.

I wish you bon courage as you complete yours. :-) XXX

  27. Rosanna,

How very nice of you to say so.

True enough,it is a long, time consuming project. Still, I am sure you would breeze through it and do much better then I did.

  28. Bravo Catherine!

:-) XXX

I've so much admiration and respect for any stitcher that ventures out to make a complex design like this! I sympathize with all the comments and sentiments stated above! The hours... the determination & perseverance... And to think this is your first carpet... Deep respect Catherine.

The satisfaction you must feel much go (be?) out of the roof? I'm also very happy for you, you now can turn to all the new projects that were popping up in your head while stitching :))))) Can't wait to see what those will look like!

  34. Thank you Debora.

I thought I would be elated when that last piece of fringe went in. Oddly enough, it was rather anticlimactic. Maybe I was expecting a brass band to start playing. haha

Yes, I am having fun with a new project. Solving new problems feels pretty good.
